WORDS FROM MY
GUIDE DOG
BY FIONA CUMMINGS
My future was decided before I was even born
A dutiful life I should have to learn
Words will be said to me so very stern
I would just have to wait until it was my turn
I now have been chosen for you
To guide you around
To give you the confidence
To make you feel proud
So here I am just
trust me please
All I ask is for you to groom me
And feed me
And keep away those darn fleas
Love me and hug me
And I will be pleased
Take me for walks
Near rivers and trees
Tickle my tummy
And I will show you my tricks
You will think I’m funny
And give me biscuits
I will not allow any harm to come to you
My words are so very
true
Together we will
weave in and out of obstacles
And I shall escort you to shops, theatres and hospitals
We can go to a football match or a game of cricket
We can play in the garden, you can throw
And I will catch it
Whatever we do we shall do now together
Because I am your new friend loyal forever
I’m just a dog but I know for you I see
My job is to find a new life for you and me
Come on put on that stupid
thing they call a harness
Let’s walk the pathways and leafy forests
Don’t be afraid know I am here
I understand each step you take
Is the walk of fear
But for every two of your legs I have four
So for all your steps I have to do more
Put on your shoes and go out that door
Make sure you have sweets in your pocket though
And a whistle for my free run
Oh it’s a new day and
Mummy and I are going to have fun
