WIMBLEDON ON THE MENU


Sadly our Laura Robson is out of the tennis, though Andy Murray, still has a chance. Laura is so sweet. I feel so sorry for her. I think if Andy losses, we won’t know the difference as his voice never changes whether he is happy or sad? He has the most boring voice in history.

It started in 1877 and is one of the four grand slam tennis tournaments and the only one played on grass courts.

Wimbledon is a suburb of London. A very lovely place to live indeed.

 

The amount of food that is consumed in the two weeks that the tennis is played each year is enormous.

About 18,000 catering staff are required over the two weeks.

Typical quantities of food consumed

  • 300,000 cups of tea and coffee
  • 250,000 bottles of water
  • 207,000 meals
  • 200,000 glasses of Pimm’s
  • 190,000 sandwiches
  • 150,000 bath buns, scones, pastries and doughnuts
  • 135,000 ice creams
  • 100,000 pints of draught beer and lager
  • 60,000 dutchees
  • 32,000 portions of fish and chips
  • 30,000 litres of milk
  • 28,000kg (112,000 punnets) of English strawberries
  • 25,000 bottles of champagne
  • 23,000 bananas
  • 22,000 slices of pizza
  • 20,000 portions of frozen yoghurt
  • 12,000kg of poached salmon and smoked salmon
  • 7000 litres of dairy cream
  • 6000 stone-baked pizzas

 Strawberries and cream are the most famous served at Wimbledon. In punnets of ten berries with cream.

8615 punnets consumed per day.

Usually Grade 1 English strawberries of the highest quality from the county of Kent.

There is plenty of choice of places to eat in the tennis event.

Wingfield Restaurant – waiter-served lunch and afternoon tea.

  • Café Pergola - both hot and cold meals together with a wine bar.
  • The Base Line Diner and Café Bar – hot and cold meals with full range of wines.
  • Covered Tea Lawn - hot drinks, soft drinks, sandwiches, baguettes, cakes and some hot food.
  • The Long Bar - full range of draft beers, spirits and wines. On the opposite side are the famous Wimbledon strawberries and cream, champagne and Pimm’s bar, Dutchee sausage and freshly baked pizzas.
