THE FORGOTTON BAUBLE
BY FIONA CUMMINGS
Take off the tinsel and toys
Each one remembering the Christmas joys
Pack away with such care
All the memories we did share
Blow out the candles for the last time this year
It’s all about Christmas cheer
To remember those we love far and near
And there’s Rudolph the amazing deer
Even removed the reef from the front door
Cleaning up the glitter from the floor
Family have all gone home now
A peaceful Christmas without a row
Exchanged gifts with the pretty bow
Kicked off our boots covered in snow
Waved goodbye from our house or the station
Hurting with the emotion
A quiet house
Perhaps a squeak from the Christmas mouse
Then just as a tear falls from your face
You turn to your fireplace
There is a bauble
I feel awful
As it’s as though it’s been forgotten
Old now, with what once was ribbon
Now a thread of cotton
Kept falling from the tree because of the tie
So placed on the mantelpiece I don’t know why
Boxes in the loft
So where to put this one last bauble?
In the top draw next to the bible
As that is what Christmas is all about
Forget the posh teapot with the pointy spout
And the TV where we do shout
As it is loud with all the family around
And pushing in the
town
Shopping through the crowds
I won’t forget that bauble next year
In fact it will have pride place with a brand new ribbon
My little bauble I hope all is forgiven
