THE NATIVITY PLAY I WROTE

 

ROUGH VERSION/COPY

 

Scene

*Low lights shine on Mary, as she lays in her bed.

*The lights turn to Gabriel, as he is sitting on a tall stool, crossed legged, eating a huge slice of cake.

*Mary sits up to the sounds of wind chimes, blowing in the wind. She rubs her eyes and is startled by the angel.

*Mary says

“Who are you? And more to the point, why are you eating my cake? I have just bought that at Farm foods, and it’s not even defrosted!”

Scene

*Angel Gabriel looks stunned, as he has been caught in the action of eating the cake. He brushes crumbs off himself and clears his voice. Opens a bottle of champagne, (A HUGE POP STARTLES THE AUDIENCE) as he opens the bottle and swigs from it.

 

Gabriel Angel says

“Don’t worry Mary, God blesses us with many things, and one of them is right now at Farm foods, it’s buy one, get one free! So I know you have plenty more in the freezer

 

Scene

(*Mary rolls her eyes as the lights go on her and then, on the angel!

 

Angel says

 “God has sent me with a message. You are to have a baby boy, and you will call him Jesus!”

 

Scene

*Mary gets up from her bed and runs to the audience and says in a shocked voice

 

Mary says

“No, no, I can not have a baby; I am not married to Joseph yet. We only went to Argos for our engagement ring yesterday. When we do have a baby, I want to call him Cid, not Jesus?”

 

 

*Angel speaks

“Oh Mary, your baby will not be Josephs, he will be the Son of God”

 

Mary says

“You mean I will not marry Joseph? I can not be a single parent, have you not heard, the Government are cutting down on benefits? I can not be a single parent and Joseph will not want me if I have someone else’s child. As for the baby being the Son of God? I don’t even know God; we have not yet been on a date, let alone have a baby?”

 

Scene

*Angel laughs and shakes his head, doing so, lots of snowflakes/ dandruff/polystyrene floats off his head. He rubs his shoulders and takes from his back pack, a very large bottle of “Head& shoulders” Shakes some on his head and turns to the audience saying

 

Angel speaks

“How embarrassing?”

*Angel then turns to Mary and says

 

Angel speaks

“Oh Mary, bless your cotton socks. You are a funny bunny! Come, come, sit by my side.”

 

Scene

*Mary kneels by the angel as he starts to tell her the plan!

As the story gets told to her, she is looking more stressed and reaches for the bottle of champagne, just as the angel turns to the audience. She takes a gulp from the bottle after wiping it with her sleeve vigorously.

 

Angel speaks

“Joseph will love your Son as he will be more important than King David. Your cousin Elizabeth will also give birth to John the Baptist, so you can share knitting patterns Mary!”

 

Scene

*The lights fade. Angel leaves stage. Mary walks across the stage and under a star lit night, she sings!

Scene

*Joseph working hard making something out of wood, banging with a hammer and misses the wood, hitting his fingers. Jumps up and down, then turns to the audience and says

Joseph speaks

”Ouch! I should have gone to Speck savers?”

 

Scene

A angel comes to him

 

 

Angel says

“Don’t be startled Joseph, I bring you good news. Mary will give birth to a king; he will be called Jesus and will be more important than your Father. The Holy Spirit has given the baby to Mary and you are to bring him up as your own.

Scene

* The star of Bethlehem standing in the background on a table, so is heigher than the stage

*3 wise men look up to the star

* The star speaks

Star says

 “ A king will be born and you must visit him and take him gifts.

Scene

*3 wise men are rummaging through draws and boxes, pulling franticly diapers, a baby bath and a rattle out. Telling each other what they have found for the new born baby.

 

W.M 1 to the others

“Look, I have this bath? It was our Kylies when she was born?”

W.M 2 to the rest

“I have a toy; the oldies are the goodies, never mind these tablets for babies?

 

W.M 3 to the rest says

I have this?

 

*Scene W.M 3 holds up something to do with babies, with an obvious plug.

Star speaks

“ “No, he is important, you must take him gold, frankincense and myrrh.

 

3 w/men say

 

“Where can we find the new born child?”

(Star says)

“Go to King Herod the great and he will tell you!”

 

Scene

*The star leads them to Herod

 

Herod speaks to his advisers, (Could be the audience?)

 

Herod

 “Where, is the Messiah to be born?”

 

 The audience, (Rich and a few pre prompted people )

 Answer

“ Bethlehem The birth place of the King!”

Scene

* The star continues to show them the way to find the baby..

 

Scene

*Shepard’s are in a field with their sheep. When an angel comes to them, and brings them "good news of great joy

 

3 angels speak

": "to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. You, will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.

Scene

 *The angel is joined by a "heavenly host"

Angels speak

 "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors.

 

Scene (First song)

*The angels sing a song (Silent night)

  

 (Narrator  speaks)

 

“Mary and Joseph travel by donkey from Nazareth to Bethlehem because the tax man told the country that the people should all return to their birth place to be able to pay their taxes.

Mary and Joseph were so tired and the donkey was gagging for a drink.

There were so many hotels but they were all full. Joseph begged to a Inn keeper asking for a bed for his heavily pregnant wife.

 

Joseph speaks

“Please, we have travelled so far and can not find anywhere to rest. My wife is to give birhth.”

Inn keeper to Joseph says

“ it is a busy time of year and I am full. My staff are so busy too and I even have to cover for the receptionist.

 

 

sceen

*Just then, the bell of the telephone rings. (Might be a good idea to have a very modern ringtone, like a Nokia tune?)

sceen

 The Inn keeper runs and answers it, whilst Joseph stands  waiting

Inn keeper returns

Inn keeper speaks

“Come Sir, you can rest downstairs with the animals in the manger.

 

sceen

*scene shows a manger with its straw and animals. The animals talk

Sheep speak

Sheep 1 to sheep2

 “ What are those humans doing in our house? They have not even brought any food with them?

 

Sheep 2 replies

 “I know, it’s Bar ber  mee!”

Sheep 1 to sheep 2 answers

Sheep 2 speeks

“It’s Barrbarrick!”

sceen then in the manger walks in a maid with a tray and turns to Mary and Joseph

Maid  says

“Canapays, Sir Madam?”

Narrator reads

The three shepherds travel to the manger and tell Mary and Joseph of the news they were told by the angel.

 

3 Shepards talk

“You are going to have a very important baby an we have brought you some wool to make a knitted hoodie for him!”

 

sceen

*By this time, crowds gather around the manger and as they await for the birth of the baby Jesus, songs are sung (Away in a manger).

*Screams are heard and Mary is giving birth. Angel Gabriel can be seen sitting on his heigh stool eating the tray of Canapays. Then a huge pop, like the champagne cork is heard and Joseph can be heard shouting

 

Joseph  shouts

“It’s a boy!”

*Jolly songs are sang including

Stevie Wonders “Happy birthday to you!”

 And Bony M’sMary’s boy child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas day.
