THE BRIDGE OF HOPE
BY FIONA CUMMINGS
There was no scope
Until the bridge of hope
We built together
Above a fast flowing river
A forgotten land forever
We saw across the other side
Reeds, in winds blew
Giving us, a view
But words we had to hide
No conversation
Was, had between us
A picture, an illustration
Then we made a fuss
We were neighbours
Though strangers
We saw your tears
Understood your fears
But couldn’t come to you
Stones, rocks and waters fierce
Fallen trees
To their knees
Made it impossible
So much trouble
But one fine day
We began to clear the way
And gather materials for our construction
We had no instructions
But we had something stronger
And that was not to be apart a moment longer
You on your side and me on mine
This would be a moment of history in time
Through rain and hail
Thunder and the odd gale
We didn’t let anything stop our plan
From children to women and man
This was a new land
A new start
And made with love from our heart
I will never forget
The day I shook your hand
I have only one regret
We didn’t do this earlier
But time is precious
And we were ambitious
It took months to build
Now our dreams are for filled
As we stand as one
Under the sun
Looking down
On leaves so green
Oak trunks chestnut brown
A beautiful scene
Such a dream
I can hear your voice
We must rejoice
We can share what we have now
Without asking how?
We had a vision
Went on a mission
And walked across water
Bricks and mortar
We have a gentle saunter
And meet one an other
We are so much stronger
For something we did together
May our friendship last forever
And let’s enjoy the view
For if you have a dream
We have proven it can come true
