PORTUGAL


Wow Portugal, where did you come from? Mexico and Japan are out of the top ten stats in total. And Portugal have appeared. I will publish the stats at the end of this month, but let’s see if Portugal stay in the top ten?

 

So, what do we know about Portugal? Smile, here I go, this is when I get a message from our Portuguese Bloggets saying, nononononono Fiona, that’s not true? Hehehaha, see what I can get right?

 

I believe, the population of Portugal is almost or around 11 million?

Lizbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal, also one of the oldest citties in the world.

 

The Vasco da Gama bridge, over the Tagus river in Lizbon, is the largest in Europe. It’s over ten miles long, 17 km’s

 

It is here you will find the biggest producers of cork products in the world, as the cork trees grow in plenty in the forests 70% of the worlds cork comes from Portugal and they mainly sell to the UK, Germany and the US.

 

They say that half of the so called new world once belonged to Portugal.

Portuguese is the official language of 9 countries

The oldest book store in the world, is in the capital.

Bertrand book shop was opened in 1732

 

One of the world’s oldest universities is in Portugal. Coimbra University, was established in 1290

Portugal and England have the oldest diplomatic alliance in the world.

Portugal has a coastline that spans over 497 miles. 800 km’s and it’s known to have 364 days of surf!

 

On the 1st of November in 1755 Lizbon was struck by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake which was followed by a tsunami and fires which brought the city to rubble, also the earthquake struck on all Saints day, holiday where the churches were filled with candles, this caused huge fires.

Two hundred and seventy five thousand people were killed and 85% of the buildings were destroyed.

 

Fado is the folk music from Portugal.

 

Portugal abolished slavery in 1761, half a century before England, France, Spain and America.
