POLAR DIARY BY FIONA CUMMINGS

I can’t believe it’s the weekend again. Hub and I have just done nothing at all today. A real lazy day. I’m so pleased to see that he has had some really much needed sleeps. He was exhausted when he left work last Friday.

I hope you have had a lovely Valentine’s day. Whether you were with a love or your pet, your child or your friend, as long as you love them and they love you, that’s what it’s all about.

1.2 million people will buy their pet a gift this Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s day is the 2nd most popular card giving day after Christmas day and second most popular flower giving day after Mother’s Day. St Valentine sent a letter to his jailors daughter who it’s said he cured of blindness and he ended his letter with from your Valentine. He was jailed because he married Christian couples… And?

1861 was the first heart shaped box of chocolates made by Cadburys chocolate in England.

I still went out last night with Hub though I felt like death warmed up. I seemed to have been ill since the end of December. Different kinds of colds.

If I was to ask you what material was the painting of the Mona Lisa, done on, what would you say? I would have said before I learned today, canvas. But no, it was wood!

Just saying. Haha.

Watching the news tonight Hub got annoyed. One person who is supposed to be clever was talking about hip replacements. She said and I quote. Going into surgery with your eyes open.”” Opposed to what? going in with your eyes closed, not being able to see, in other words, if you are blind you have a lack of intelligence?

Blind drunk, so you are drunk, you are like a blind person?

Are you blind or something?

Again, if you don’t know what is going on, you must be blind, well, stupid. In a world where we can’t say this and that, but people can use terminology that is really insulting towards people who are blind.

Again, just saying.

One of the shops we go to may be a couple of times per year is Aldi’s. it’s a great shop, so cheap. So, how can they be cheaper than other shops? Well they try to avoid brand names. Their shops are normally smaller than the bigger shops because they sell 90 per cent of their own brand names rather than the ten per cent of famous names. So, less storage in ware houses and less time to stack shelves. Most of the produce is in boxes or stacked on top of each other. So, staff are not always having to restock and make the shelving look pretty.

Apparently, they use energy efficient lighting too. Because Aldi’s use less staff, they pay them more, which is great for them. Also, they don’t need to pay staff to collect the shopping carts because you use a coin if you want one, so then you return the cart to where you got it from, to get your coin back. They don’t have loads of TV Advertisements either.

It’s been on our news today that children all over the country have been protesting rather than go to school. Why? Because of climate change. But whilst they are going crazy about how bad we are in the way we now live; how many kids will refuse to drive or not eat meat or give up their mobile phones to save the world?

Something has to be done. But where to start? I believe obviously in eating less meat. Use your car less. So many people I know just will not walk. I mean our nearest shop is a ten-minute walk away. But will people here walk? No, they use their cars. My Son goes to the gym it’s a fifteen-minute walk. Now he works so many hours the thought of the gym is enough to put me off but he still goes five times per week. But he drives and I understand why, as he is already tired. But on his days off, he should could walk. We really take for granted our cars.

Climate change is really affecting the beautiful polar bears. Did you know their Latin name translates as sea bear? They can swim for days. They can swim several hundred miles over a few days and 6 miles per hour. They paddle with their front paws and their back paws are used to steer. They can walk several thousand miles per year too. Their paws have small bumps on the bottom to stop them from slipping. When their fir gets wet, they have a layer of fat to keep them warm. Pregnant bears can starve for eight months before giving birth. When the cubs are born, they stay with their mothers for up to two and a half years.

Polar bears need sea ice which is declining to to climate change. Sadly, they are so skinny now compared to what they were ten years ago.

And finally, some funny signs in the UK the first one I dare you not to say out loud. Urg. Second one, I bet it makes you laugh.

“Pie shop opens on former pet shop site””

“If you want to use our toilet. Press button 1 and turn knob.””
