FRIDAY THOUGHTS BY FIONA CUMMINGS

It’s the weekend and we are here again. I have had a fantastic day with a wonderful friend. Geordie and I went for lunch and sat for over three hours chatting nonstop. I adore her. I always say she is like the missing piece to my jigsaw and together we paint a beautiful picture as we are just so very alike in so many ways, we complement each other’s lives/lifestyle. But then we are so different too in so many ways. She lives her footballer’s wife lifestyle and I am just me… I love it when we get together, you know the magazines like Hello!  Well I feel like I am reading a story that is so far from my own and being with her is like peaking through the window of a mansion. She is the extreme of what I’m not an yet we share so much in common. I doubt I have had a friend like this in my life. I love my friends as they are all so different. And Geordie is really different, but, the same. I’m sure this will be one of those blogs I read later on in the year and think, why did I write that as I’m sure it isn’t making any sense to you, all I can say in short is she is a real good feel friend.

We can talk about sad things, an yet we still end up happy. We can laugh so much our stomachs hurt. Because she comes from my home town, we share that rare sense of humour that can only be found in Newcastle. Geordies as we are known as, have a spark that I only have found among people from that part of the UK. Who knows, may be only we get our humour, perhaps. Haha. See what I mean? You are sitting there with a serious face, I’m smiling ear to ear… but then you may find something funny that I find so wrong… it’s strange how people from all regions are so different a yet in general, British humour is, well, that, British humour.

There is a lot about students in our news. I’m not sure why I didn’t think about it until now, but I feel I have a theory as to why situations are as they are right now.

So many of our young people are going through bad times at University. According to the Office of National statistics, 95 students committed suicide in England and Wales last year. The number of students disclosing mental health problems       have increased fivefold in a decade.

There were 2 million students in England and Wales in the 12 months of the research. So, 4.7 deaths per 100 thousand students. Suicides were higher among men than women.

Firstly, I do wonder if kids are too young to go away from home. I mean if you think about it, they are children at school and suddenly they are expected to be able to cope on their own, getting up on time, being where they need to be, cook, clean, well, I know a lot don’t bother, but even if it’s putting their own food away in case a room mate eats their budget food… paying for bills they have never had to bother about before. Washing and so on. As well as coping with meeting new people. New friends. Kind of forced friends in a way. When we are small children, making friends is so easy and uncomplicated. There is loads of alcohol and no parents there to guide them or keep them safe from drugs. And I honestly believe that in todays society, where our children have their heads stuck in their iPhones etc where emoji are used rather than actual words. When they text rather than speak, socialising and communicating is becoming    something in the past.

I wonder if our kids would be better working from school, then attending some kind of university course one day per week. Like a full day?

I also think that years ago there wasn’t as much talk about depression or mental health. Hence why the increase by fivefold now.

Sadly, so many of our horses in the UK have caught the dreadful virus of horse flu. Poor poor beautiful creatures. But one good thing, all the horse racing has been cancelled for now anyway. 144 stables are on lockdown.

Finally, something that made me smile. Reading my email this morning, I was shocked to see one advertising a must have gift for Valentine’s day. Well it was who it was from that threw me. Dyson. My first thought was. Em, a vacuum for valentines’ day? Not very romantic….

Then I read on. It was a Dyson supersonic hairdryer

Well still I thought not very romantic, but slightly better than a vacuum…

And have you seen the price of them? Oh my, shocking. Hundreds of pounds.

I would love a trial of one to see just how good they are. My hair is long and thick and takes forever to dry, so this is meant to dry your hair fast. But I wouldn’t dare spend that much money on one.

Well that leaves me to say  goodnight and sweet dreams. It’s late I have a big day tomorrow. Whatever you are doing this weekend stay safe and I  hope something wonderful happens for you. x
